Day 4: To La Habana

Isobel walked us to the plaza where we caught a "wahwah", a public bus originally intended for airport workers (says so on the side of the bus). Less than a dollar each for a ride to a place at the edge of the city, where we caught a taxi...

which admittedly wasn't much, but certainly better than the horse bus.

We had a reserve' at a Casa Particular (private, budget B and B) called "The Greenhouse", which lived up to its name...

and to its ranking in the LP as the best value in Havana Vieja.

It was also located very near the Plaza Vieja (those who don't know that "Vieja" means "old", please move back three squares), where we had lunch at a sideplaza cafe...

and then on to the walking tour that started at the Catedral San Cristobal de Havana.

Some of the street buildings were in poor repair, but many had been restored, so that the walk was quite pleasant.

As you can tell by the photos, we had to duck a shower or two, so we did that by hitting some museums, the first being the City Museum, located in a very cool former palace...

huge rooms with fine French furniture (from Cuba's period as a French colony), and gorgeous chandeliers...

a throne room for the then queen of Spain (who never visited, so it was never used). We were treated to an excellent free tour by a woman we thought was just a guard. Same thing happened in the mural museum, which had a neat old well in its courtyard...

and in a 19th century presidential railroad car that the guard/guide insisted was only used by Fidel for symbolic purposes, to ride from Santiago to Havana.

We just missed the visiting hours for the St. Francis of Assisi catedral...

but were able to get a peek inside.
